Submissions reopen Nov 1st, 2015:

With the success of the 2015 Korean Indie and Expat Film Festival came a few questions:

  1. What is an expat?
  2. What is a no budget film?
  3. Is this an international competition? Do expats have to be in Korea?

To answer these briefly:

  1. An expat is simply a voluntary emigrant; short or long term.
  2. This wasn’t an issue for filmmakers as much as the audience. For us “no-budget” is a badge of honor that says we did the impossible, it also says the film was made for less than your typical low-budget film.
  3. We are international. Our winners hailed from Spain, USA, Korea and Germany. To reflect this we even changed our name to the Korea International Expat Film Festival.

We welcome films from travelers and seekers. Sometimes the travel is far physically, other times, emotionally, spiritually, and existentially. We will not be tied to producers and agents and funding and grants… we’ll make our films any way we can.

Rules

Please make sure to read all of the festival rules as well as the terms and conditions.
Each submission must have its own submission fee. Fee waivers MAY be considered if the filmmaker goes out of their way to make us feel really awesome about doing it. (Youtube videos with songs about how awesome we are have a pretty good shot at a discount.)
All works must be submitted as an online screener (Vimeo preferred). ONLINE SCREENERS > DVDs. (1995 called…)
If you curmudgeons insist… DVD entries must postmarked by the deadline date of the entry period in which a film was submitted. Or you could send us your film on VHS tapes. Or Laserdiscs. WE REFUSE RESPONSIBILITY FOR PHYSICAL MEDIA. THAT INCLUDES WATCHING THEM.
Screeners will not be returned. Please do not send self-addressed stamped envelopes. However, if you do, we’ll write you a nice thank you note.
Eligible works must have been completed within 3 years of the selection date. Feature There are no premiere requirements for films. We do not discriminate against films that are available to the public online.
Works in progress WILL be accepted for submission. Please include information as to what still needs to be completed (color correction, score, etc.).
If you want to replace your original submission with an upgraded version, email our programming director with “Replacement Copy” in the subject heading. Any judging that was done with the original submission will not change. Any future judging will be done with the new copy. If judging is completed on your film, the new film will only be considered if you draw us a really nice picture of our programming director on a Luck dragon battling a nine-armed Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
Only independently produced films and videos are appropriate for this competition. Artists must have final creative control over their work to be eligible.
KIXFF DOES NOT PAY SCREENING FEES. By submitting your film via FilmFreeway you acknowledge that the festival will not pay to present your work.
Be kind. Be honest. Don’t be douchebags. If you think you have a film that may not meet our requirements, contact us. If the film is great, maybe we can work something out. Don’t send us your commercials or lie about premiere statuses. Don’t lie about your budget or your expat status. This fest is for low-budget indies and nomad filmmakers. If we find out, we’ll make a penis-shaped puppet of you and mock you mercilessly in the confines of our office.

Terms and Conditions

By entering your film for consideration for the 2015 Korea Indie and Expat Film Festival (henceforth KIXFF), you authorize that your work is cleared for festival exhibition and accept full legal responsibility for the intellectual property therein. Entry into the festival constitutes permission to exhibit your work at the 2015 KIXFF. KIXFF is also hereby granted the right to utilize an excerpt from any film submitted and accepted for exhibition at the Festival for promotional purposes. The undersigned shall indemnify and hold harmless KIXFF from and against any and all claims, liabilities, losses, damages, and expenses (including but not limited to attorney’s fees, and costs of the court) which may be incurred by reason of any claim involving copyright, trademark, credits, publicity, screening, and loss of or damage to the screening videos entered. KIXFF may opt to withdraw your work from the festival at any time for any reason. We’re serious about the penis puppets. Ask us to pay to screen your film and see what happens.
