About the director

Born in 1974 à Nantes, Yann Kerloc’h majored in political science then journalism. He drove quickly himself towards movie reviews, with a speciality in Asian movies. Then he worked in film sales companies Celluloid Dreams and Memento Films on acquisitions and festivals department, while doing script reviewing and doctoring. In between, he started to direct personal projects. Un monde en super plastique (A super plastic world), shot in France with two children, is its first short film with a production company in 2008. He is going in South Korea since 2003, when he directed the experimental short Disappearing. Since 2009, he directed in South Korea several fiction short films or music videos, with Korean teams, French and/or Korean actors. Like A B1, completed at the end of 2015, has been selected to a pitching session for film funding at Seoul Agape Film Festival, then funded by the Korean Alliance Française and by crowdfunding on Ulule.com. Before, his two main short films were Ballad of a thin man (2010), first fiction short film directed by a French in Korea, selected in the French/Korean film festival of Paris 2010 and Blowin’ in the wind (2012), a more experimental work, mostly improvised with a Korean actress. He is also the feature film programmer of the Jeju French Film Film festival since 2014 and writing a feature film set in Korea, Dobari, with the French/Luxembourg production company Les Films Fauves, selected in the workshop Ties That Bind (Udine and Singapour Film Festival).

What was the best experience in making this film?

Souvenir of two beautiful days filming a beautiful person, including one day in a school where I studied (Korean) or worked a little. So all of this was very pleasant.

In what ways did you grow as a filmmaker in making this film?

This is the first time I was filming sensuality, eventually eroticism, and the idea was also to add an ironic, distanced approach as Jeong Duri is unique mix of a strong feminist, fine arts artist, and sexy model : she was a star of social networks and was about to be “Miss Maxim Korea” of the year. She is not a singer originally, but wrote this light song for fun and asked me if I wanted to do a music video. With this commissioned work, I had to redefine my position as a filmmaker, until very intimate aspects : I’m an heterosexual male, totally not the kind of “sexy commercial” director, “fashion photographer” etc, and also not the kind of guy at ease with the presence of a beautiful girl in general, because I’m way to sensitive. But on the other side, of course I enjoyed erotic videos, and my taste goes more towards asian girls. So I had to film an iconic sexy model but also friend, with a cold, reflective, smart mind. Don’t know what the result looks like, but I know that I learned a lot about myself in the process.

What does this film contribute to the greater good?

The lyrics and the girl portrayed in the film shows a smart, kinky, humorous free-minded girl that defies male fantasies as well as school institution. Of course we didn’t ask shooting agreements to the two schools where we shot, and it was part of the fun and the challenge.
